xAI, the artificial intelligence company backed by Elon Musk, is expanding the capabilities of its Grok chatbot with the introduction of a new memory feature. The update, now in beta, allows Grok to retain information from past conversations, enabling it to deliver more personalized responses over time.
Available through the Grok website and its iOS and Android apps, the memory function is designed to learn user preferences through repeated interactions. For example, users who frequently ask for restaurant recommendations or news summaries may start receiving tailored responses based on their prior chats. However, this feature is currently not accessible in the EU or U.K., likely due to regional data privacy regulations.
The addition brings Grok closer in functionality to other AI assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Both competitors already support memory systems that allow them to remember user-specific details, improving relevance in future responses. ChatGPT recently expanded its memory tools to include broader chat history context, while Gemini also supports persistent memory tied to user profiles.
Grok’s memory system emphasizes transparency and user control. According to a post from Grok’s official account on X, users can review exactly what the chatbot remembers and selectively delete individual memories. The option to disable memory entirely is also available in the settings under Data Controls.
At launch, the memory deletion feature is available on the web and will roll out soon to Android. xAI also confirmed it’s working on extending memory support to the Grok experience integrated within the X platform.
The memory rollout signals a step toward more adaptive, context-aware AI tools that respond to users more naturally. While still in beta, the feature positions Grok to better compete in an increasingly personalized AI assistant space.
