A fraudulent crypto wallet app masquerading as the legitimate “Rabby Wallet” snuck onto the App Store, scamming users out of thousands of dollars before eventually being removed. Ironically, while the real Rabby Wallet was under Apple’s review.
Rabby Wallet users took to Reddit and Apple’s forums to express their frustration and report staggering losses. One user claims victims collectively lost over $100,000. “I used the Fake App and lost 24k USD… so disappointed in Apple” one victim stated.
While the exact cause of the security breach remains uncertain, one theory suggests the scammers hijacked an existing app with a previously innocuous purpose, updating it to mimic Rabby Wallet and slipping the malicious update past Apple’s reviewers.
The ‘Rabby Wallet’ debacle follows recent cases of fake LastPass apps and a movie piracy app lingering on the store for months.
