In a wide-ranging interview with WIRED, Apple CEO Tim Cook offered a glimpse into his vision for the future of Apple, discussing the company’s latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), the increasing role of technology in health care, and the importance of privacy in an increasingly digital world.
Apple Intelligence: AI with a Focus on Privacy
Cook delved into the development of Apple Intelligence, the company’s first major foray into the world of generative AI. He emphasized Apple’s commitment to user privacy, highlighting that Apple’s AI tools are designed to run primarily on the device itself, minimizing the reliance on cloud-based processing and keeping user data secure.
“We wanted to innovate in a way that was personal and private,” Cook explained. “We began to think about the intersection of those things in a way that was classic Apple—how do you deliver this technology so that it benefits people and enhances their lives?”
Addressing Concerns About AI
Cook addressed concerns about the potential negative impact of AI on human communication and creativity. He argued that AI tools like Apple Intelligence can enhance productivity and creative expression without replacing human ingenuity.
“It’s still coming from you,” Cook said, referring to AI-assisted writing. “It’s your thoughts and your perspective. You and I both remember the productivity that came from the advent of the personal computer. It was no longer you punching your calculator, you were doing something on a spreadsheet. It was no longer you at the typewriter, you were using a word processor. Logic Pro helps musicians create music, but they’re still the author.”
The Power of Custom Silicon
The interview also touched upon Apple’s strategic investment in custom silicon chips, which have played a pivotal role in the company’s recent product successes. Cook acknowledged the importance of owning core technologies while also explaining the decision to partner with OpenAI for world-knowledgeable large language models.
“We’ve always believed that we should own the primary technologies that our products are built on,” Cook stated. “Steve [Jobs] talked about this. I’m not saying we’ve always done that, but we’ve always believed that, and it was always a journey to get there.”
Sustainability and the Future
Cook reiterated Apple’s commitment to sustainability, emphasizing that the company’s carbon-neutral goals remain a top priority despite the increased energy demands of AI infrastructure. He expressed confidence in Apple’s ability to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 through continued investment in renewable energy and efficient data center operations.
AI and the Future of Healthcare
The conversation also explored the transformative potential of AI in health care. Cook shared his belief that Apple’s most significant contribution to society will be in the health domain, highlighting the company’s ongoing efforts to develop innovative health-focused features and devices.
“It’s clear to me that if you zoom out way into the future, and you look back and ask what Apple’s biggest contribution was, it will be in the health area,” Cook asserted. “That’s what I really believe.”
Vision Pro and the Future of AR
Cook addressed the challenges and successes of the Vision Pro wearable display, acknowledging its early adopter status while expressing optimism about its future potential and the broader role of augmented reality (AR) in Apple’s product roadmap.
“AR is a huge deal,” Cook said. “With Vision Pro, we’ve progressed to what is clearly the most advanced technology we’ve ever done, and I think the most advanced technology in the world in terms of electronics problems. We’ll see where it goes.”
Addressing Antitrust Concerns
Regarding the ongoing antitrust lawsuits against Apple and other tech giants, Cook defended Apple’s practices, emphasizing the company’s user-centric approach and commitment to privacy and security. He expressed confidence in Apple’s ability to demonstrate its commitment to fair competition and user benefits in court.
Apple’s Legacy and the Road Ahead
Cook concluded the interview by reflecting on Apple’s legacy, expressing his hope that the company will be remembered for its innovative products that have positively impacted people’s lives. He also shared his personal connection to Apple and his vision for the company’s future, emphasizing the importance of continuous innovation and a focus on enhancing the user experience.
“I think Apple will be remembered for delivering great products that changed the world, that really improved people’s lives,” Cook stated. “Our users feel it when they go into an Apple Store. They feel it when they use the products.”
