ByteDance, the creators of the wildly popular video-sharing platform TikTok, have dipped their toes into the world of close-knit social interaction with their new app, Whee. Unlike the emphasis on virality and public performance that often defines social media, Whee promises a more intimate and authentic experience. Here, users can share real-life photos with just their closest friends, fostering a space free from the pressures of likes, follower counts, and the curated perfection often associated with other platforms.
Whee’s current limited release targets a select group of markets (available on the UAE App Store), with roughly a dozen countries having access to the app so far.
Instead of replicating the fleeting nature of Snapchat’s Stories or the time-bound photo prompts of BeReal, Whee seems to carve its own niche. The app bears a closer resemblance to a private version of Instagram. Users can share photos with their friend circle, and only these friends can leave likes and comments, fostering a more personal and interactive experience.
The launch of Whee comes on the heels of another ByteDance app, TikTok Notes, which also draws inspiration from Instagram’s focus on photo posts. It remains to be seen how these two apps will coexist within ByteDance’s portfolio and how they will be differentiated to cater to distinct user preferences. Whether Whee manages to carve out a loyal user base in the already crowded social media landscape will be interesting to follow.
