Threads takes a page from X’s playbook with community notes

Meta’s Threads app is reportedly testing a feature strikingly similar to Twitter’s Community Notes, further blurring the lines between the two social media platforms. Leaked screenshots reveal a “Write Community Note” option that allows users to anonymously add context to Threads posts.

Community Notes, originally known as Birdwatch on Twitter, enable users to provide additional information or clarifications to posts that may be misleading or require further context. Threads appears to be adopting a similar approach, likely as part of Meta’s broader shift towards a more open and community-driven moderation model.

In addition to Community Notes, Threads is also making changes to how it handles political content. Previously, the app discouraged political posts, but it now allows users to adjust the amount of political content they see in their feeds. This move aligns with Meta’s recent efforts to position itself as a champion of free speech.

While Community Notes and the option to adjust political content visibility may seem like steps towards greater transparency and user control, it remains to be seen whether these changes will address the core issues users have with Threads. Some critics argue that these features may simply amplify existing problems and contribute to the spread of misinformation.
