In a bid to enhance real-time interaction and address user feedback, Threads has rolled out a new “Activity Status” feature. This addition allows users to see when others are active on the platform, indicated by a green bubble next to their profile picture.
Threads, the microblogging platform from Meta, has faced criticism for not prioritizing real-time content in its recommendations. The “Activity Status” feature aims to tackle this issue by providing users with a visual cue of who is currently online and potentially available for immediate engagement.
The feature is enabled by default, displaying a green bubble beside the profile photos of active users. Instagram head Adam Mosseri stated that this update is intended to facilitate real-time conversations and make it easier for users to connect with each other.
Interestingly, Threads still lacks direct messaging capabilities, a feature commonly associated with online status indicators in other social media platforms and chat apps. Meta has previously indicated that it does not intend to incorporate direct messaging within Threads.
While the “Activity Status” feature is a step towards real-time engagement, it may not fully address the desire for a more dynamic and immediate feed. Furthermore, the platform currently lacks a clear mechanism for users to specifically identify and connect with those who are currently active.
Threads is reportedly developing a “Community” feature, similar to groups on other platforms. This feature could potentially provide a more effective context for the “Activity Status” indicator. Within communities focused on specific interests or hobbies, knowing who is online could significantly enhance real-time discussions and interactions.
The “Community” feature is still under development and its release timeline remains uncertain. As Threads continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the platform integrates features like “Activity Status” to create a more engaging and real-time user experience. While Threads aims to be a strong competitor in the microblogging space, it still has room for improvement to truly rival established platforms like X. The “Activity Status” feature is a positive step, but further development and refinement are needed to fully realize its potential.
