Meta’s microblogging app, Threads, is gearing up for a major upgrade this June with the release of its API. This highly anticipated move has been a top request from users since Threads launched in July 2023, and it promises to bring a whole new level of functionality to the platform.
What Does an API Mean for Threads?
An API acts like a bridge, allowing different apps to talk to each other. With the Threads API, developers will be able to do cool things like automatically cross-post WordPress articles to your Threads account or use popular social media management tools like Hootsuite and Sprout Social to schedule and monitor your Threads content.
Meta’s been testing the waters with a few key partners, and even Techmeme, a popular tech news aggregator, made its first API-powered Threads post today. Interestingly, it was a user request on Techmeme that inspired the entire API project!
The initial June release will let you connect apps to create and manage your Threads posts, but that’s just the beginning. Expect features like reply moderation and analytics to roll out in future updates.
If you haven’t tried Threads yet, now’s a great time to jump in. Download the free app on the App Store and make sure you’re updated to the latest version for the best experience. Recent updates added quick camera access, the ability to save drafts, and there are even experiments with a “Trending” feature.
