Sonos is ready to shake things up! On May 7th (subject to change, of course), they’re set to release a major revamp of their mobile app for both Android and iOS. Screenshots leaked to The Verge reveal a sleek new look and improved functionality, geared towards simplifying setup and boosting connectivity across their speaker lineup.
This overhaul applies to the Sonos S2 app, introduced back in 2020 when the company split support between older and newer devices. The updated design ditches the familiar bottom navigation tabs in favor of a centralized homescreen, streamlining the user experience. Quality-of-life features abound: a persistent search bar makes finding your tunes a breeze, while shuffle and repeat buttons are now easily accessible from the Now Playing screen. Plus, you can tweak the volume slider right from the mini-player, no matter where you navigate in the app.
Customization gets a boost too. Scrollable carousels let you access playlists and music services quickly on the homescreen – and you can rearrange these to put your favorites front and center. Speaker and soundbar settings now live in a dedicated “Your System” section for easier access. Even the app’s icon is getting a refresh, swapping the tan background for black with a crisp white Sonos logo.
While the current Sonos app enjoys solid review ratings, some customers have voiced frustration over time. This revamp seems aimed squarely at addressing those concerns. It’s not just about the looks, though; Bloomberg previously revealed the app’s codename, “Passport,” hinting at deeper changes linked to Sonos’ highly anticipated first-ever wireless headphones. These premium headphones will go head-to-head with titans like Apple, Sony, and Sennheiser.
Deep integration with existing Sonos speakers will be a major selling point for the headphones. Expect features like wirelessly piping TV audio from your Sonos soundbar directly to the headphones, a killer feature for late-night viewing. CEO Patrick Spence sees the headphones as the next big thing for Sonos.
