Sonos has decided to cancel its planned streaming video player, codenamed Pinewood, despite the device having reached advanced stages of development and beta testing. The decision was announced by the company’s leadership during an internal meeting.
Pinewood was intended to be Sonos’ major hardware release for 2025, but the project has been discontinued as interim CEO Tom Conrad redirects the company’s focus. The decision follows a period of challenges for Sonos, particularly related to its software. Conrad indicated that Sonos’ entry into the video streaming market is being postponed.
The cancellation of Pinewood leaves Sonos without a major new hardware product for the latter half of 2025. The company’s recent hardware releases include the Arc Ultra soundbar and Sub 4.
Sonos will now prioritize improvements to its software. The company’s spokesperson confirmed its ongoing partnership with The Trade Desk, the company behind the operating system intended for Pinewood.
Pinewood was designed to offer streaming video applications, universal search, and content aggregation, along with HDMI switching and passthrough functionality. The device was also intended to support new surround sound configurations.
The Pinewood project was initiated under former Sonos CEO Patrick Spence, who stepped down earlier this year, and was also a focus for Nick Millington, the company’s chief innovation officer.
