Nikon has announced the Coolpix P1100, the latest iteration in its line of superzoom bridge cameras. Building upon the legacy of its predecessor, the P1100 offers an impressive 125x optical zoom, while incorporating several new features aimed at enhancing the user experience, particularly for niche photography enthusiasts.
The P1100 boasts a 24-3000mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens, providing an extraordinary range for capturing distant subjects. This extensive reach is made possible by a physically small 16.79-megapixel sensor (type 1/2.3). The lens features a variable aperture, ranging from f/2.8 at the wide end to f/8 at the telephoto end. For those seeking even more reach, a digital zoom function extends the zoom capability to an equivalent of 12000mm or 600x, though with the expected trade-off in image quality.
To help users achieve sharp, blur-free images at such extreme magnifications, Nikon has included Dual Detect Optical VR, which provides image stabilization equivalent to 4.0 stops of shake reduction at the center of the frame.
The P1100 supports 4K video recording at up to 30p, a 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD screen for flexible framing, and a timelapse feature for capturing extended events. A clean HDMI output is also available for connecting to external monitors or recorders.
While many of the core specifications, such as the sensor and video capabilities, are similar to the previous P1000 model, Nikon has introduced several key improvements. Recognizing the needs of bird watchers and wildlife photographers, the P1100 features a dedicated Bird Watching Mode with a selectable AF-area function. This mode allows users to assign frequently used camera functions to the Fn1/Fn2 buttons on the optional ML-L7 Remote Control, providing easier access to settings while focusing on their subject.
Another helpful addition is Fireworks Mode, designed to optimize long-exposure captures of fireworks displays by minimizing blown-out highlights. Finally, Nikon has updated the connectivity port from micro-USB to the more modern and versatile USB-C.
The Coolpix P1100 is scheduled to be available in late February at a suggested retail price of $1,099.95, a slight increase over the launch price of its predecessor. With its exceptional zoom capabilities and targeted feature set, the P1100 aims to cater to photographers who demand extreme reach and specialized tools for their particular areas of interest.
