Meta and Universal Music Group (UMG) have announced an expanded global partnership, aiming to further integrate music into Meta’s diverse online platforms. This multi-year agreement extends the creative and commercial opportunities for UMG artists and songwriters across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Horizon, Threads, and, notably, WhatsApp for the first time.
The partnership emphasizes fair compensation for artists and songwriters, particularly concerning short-form video content like Reels. The inclusion of WhatsApp, with its vast user base, opens up new revenue streams for artists. This landmark deal builds upon their 2017 agreement, which was the first of its kind between a major music company and a social media platform.
Tamara Hrivnak, Meta’s VP of Music and Content Business Development, expressed enthusiasm about the renewed partnership, highlighting its potential to connect fans, artists, and songwriters in innovative ways across Meta’s platforms, including the exciting addition of WhatsApp.
This expanded collaboration signals a significant development in the intersection of music and social media, empowering artists and shaping the future of online music experiences.
