The era of square photos on Instagram may be drawing to a close. Instagram Head Adam Mosseri recently hinted at a potential change in the platform’s profile grid layout, shifting from the traditional square format to a rectangular one.
Mosseri explained that the current square layout is outdated, as most content uploaded to Instagram today is vertical.Cropping these images to fit the square format results in a significant loss of visual information.
While acknowledging that some users meticulously curate their grids with specific colors and messages, Mosseri emphasized the importance of prioritizing the content itself. He expressed hope that Instagram can find a way to manage this transition smoothly.
Currently, the rectangular grid is being tested with a limited number of users. However, a glimpse of this potential change can be seen in the video tab of profiles, where clip previews are already displayed in rectangular format.
This isn’t the first time the idea of a rectangular grid has surfaced. In 2022, there were reports of Instagram working on a setting to allow users to switch between 4:5 and square aspect ratios for their profile grids. Two years later, it seems this change might finally be coming to fruition.
