Instagram is adding some zest to its messaging capabilities. The company is introducing new features for photo editing, sticker creation, and themes, aiming to enhance user engagement within the app. By streamlining communication and adding interactive elements, Instagram seeks to strengthen its appeal as a messaging platform.
In the ever-competitive landscape of social media, the direct messaging feature, or DMs, has become a key battleground.Meta’s new text-based platform, Threads, which directly competes with Twitter/X, is currently reliant on Instagram’s existing DMs for private conversations. Other emerging platforms like Bluesky are incorporating DMs directly into their apps.
With today’s update, Instagram users will gain access to a sticker maker within the direct messaging interface. This tool allows users to select a photo from their library and create a reaction sticker by cutting out an object from it. A similar feature was previously introduced in WhatsApp earlier this year. iPhone users can also utilize the built-in sticker creation tool and apply those stickers across various apps.
Further enhancing the messaging experience, Instagram now enables users to add stickers or draw directly on photos before sending them in a DM. These editing tools were previously available only in the Stories composer.
Another new addition is a birthday note feature. Users celebrating their birthdays can post a note to let friends know, prompting a celebratory cake effect and confetti animation when tapped. This feature mirrors the long-standing birthday reminders on Facebook, which have been a significant factor in user engagement.
Finally, Instagram is joining other messaging apps in offering new themes for chats, including seasonal options like “Fall” and themes inspired by popular figures like “Sabrina Carpenter.”
