Instagram has expanded its Reels functionality by incorporating a feature familiar to TikTok users: the ability to play videos at double speed. This new feature allows users to fast-forward through Reels by long-pressing on either side of the screen.
The introduction of speed control comes as Instagram Reels, like TikTok, has increased the maximum length of its videos. Initially limited to 15 seconds, Reels now support videos up to three minutes long. This expansion in video length has prompted Instagram to provide users with tools to manage their viewing experience, allowing them to consume content more efficiently.
The ability to accelerate video playback is particularly relevant in the context of short-form video content. With users accustomed to the rapid consumption of such content, the fast-forward option increases the likelihood that viewers will watch longer Reels to completion. This aligns with the platform’s aim to provide quick, engaging entertainment.
The adoption of this feature by Instagram reflects the platform’s ongoing effort to emulate the successful formula of TikTok. Given the similarities between Instagram Reels and TikTok, it is not unexpected that Instagram would incorporate features that have proven popular on the latter platform. This is not the first instance of Instagram drawing inspiration from TikTok; the Reels Remix feature, for example, is a direct adaptation of TikTok’s Duet tool.
The addition of speed control to Instagram Reels represents a continued evolution of the platform’s video features, designed to enhance user engagement and facilitate content consumption in a manner consistent with contemporary viewing habits.
