Google is making all of its AI features in Workspace free for all users, eliminating the previous $20 per user monthly charge for Gemini Business. This move brings AI-powered tools to Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Meet, and other Workspace apps at no extra cost. However, Google is simultaneously increasing the price of all Workspace plans by approximately $2 per user per month.
Previously, access to Google’s full suite of AI features required a premium subscription. Now, all Workspace users can take advantage of tools like:
- AI-powered writing assistance in Docs and Gmail
- Automated meeting summaries in Google Meet
- AI-generated designs for spreadsheets and videos
- NotebookLM, a research assistant that can summarize and analyze documents
- Direct access to the Gemini bot for information retrieval and task automation
Google’s decision to make AI features free while raising subscription prices reflects a strategic move to encourage wider adoption of its AI tools. By removing the cost barrier, Google aims to make its AI features accessible to a broader user base and drive greater engagement with its ecosystem.
This move also aligns with the broader trend in the industry, as companies like Microsoft are also integrating AI features into their office suites. Microsoft recently announced that its Copilot Pro AI features would be included in the standard Microsoft 365 subscription.
Both Google and Microsoft are betting that the cost of providing AI features to all users will be offset by increased adoption and user engagement. By making AI tools more accessible, these companies aim to transform the way people work and solidify their positions as leaders in the AI-powered workplace.
