Google is extending its new color scheme and default map style to third-party apps utilizing the Google Maps Platform. This includes APIs and SDKs that developers use to integrate Google Maps into their apps or websites. The transition began in May 2024 and will continue until March 18, 2025.
The updated color scheme, which debuted last year, is now prevalent across Android, iOS, and the web. Notable changes include the replacement of yellow-colored roads with grey and the use of teal instead of blue to represent water bodies.
The new look of Google Maps has not been universally welcomed. A former Google Maps designer voiced concerns on social media, describing the new style as “colder, less accurate, and less human.” Despite these critiques, the changes have improved the usability and readability of the maps.
A recently released support document, highlighted by Android Authority, details the rollout schedule for various tools, such as the updated Google Maps SDKs for Android and iOS. In the upcoming months, other tools like the Navigation SDK, Maps Static API, and Maps Embed API will also be updated.
Between May 2024 and March 18, 2025, the default map style will be updated for the following APIs and SDKs. Developers are encouraged to opt-in to the new map style early to ensure compatibility with their applications.
Developers using map IDs (unique identifiers representing individual Google Map instances) can update to the latest version of cloud-based map styling for the refreshed map style on mobile and web. Those not using map IDs will need to manually update their respective SDK or API.
Opting into the new map style early gives developers a few months to reconsider, as opting out will no longer be possible after March 18, 2025, when the transition completes.
Even with the new style, Google will allow developers to “create custom map styles reminiscent of the current default map styles.” The new changes indicate that the updated Google Maps colors are here to stay, regardless of user preferences.
