Google has enhanced Gemini’s integration with Google Drive, introducing the ability to perform queries at the folder level. This new feature allows users to ask Gemini to summarize folder contents, locate specific files within folders, and even analyze the overall theme of the documents contained within.
This expands Gemini’s existing Drive capabilities, which previously included summarizing individual documents, extracting key facts, and interacting with PDFs. The folder-level support significantly improves organization and content understanding.
Users can now ask Gemini to perform tasks such as:
- Summarizing the key findings and themes of research papers stored in a specific folder.
- Locating files based on keywords or content descriptions when the exact file name is unknown.
To use this feature, users can mention the folder name in their Gemini query using the “@” symbol. For example, queries like “Summarize files in @-folder” or “What is the theme of the content in @-folder” will prompt Gemini to analyze the specified folder’s contents.
This update is particularly beneficial for users managing large document volumes, streamlining information retrieval and analysis. However, Gemini can currently only analyze text documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, and presentations; other file types like images and videos are not yet supported.
The rollout is currently limited to Google Workspace customers with Gemini add-ons (Business, Enterprise, Education, and Education Premium) and Google One AI Premium members. It is not yet available for personal Google accounts.
