BMW’s bold “Neue Klasse” concept, showcasing their electric future, now has a taller, SUV sibling: the “Neue Klasse X.” While BMW labels it an “SAV” (Sport Activity Vehicle), we’ll stick with the more familiar SUV here.
Technical specs are light, but BMW spills some juicy details about the drive system. To preserve iconic BMW driving dynamics, they’ve developed a special control system for their next-gen eDrive motors. This relies on a new in-house software stack and the power of multiple “super brains” – high-performance computers working in tandem for responsive, efficient performance. “More dynamic performance, more precision, more efficiency and even more fun to drive,” promises BMW’s Board of Management.
The Neue Klasse X abandons current BMW batteries for cell-to-pack large-volume round cells, offering a significant upgrade. Expect 800-volt charging for well over 200 kW capacity, potentially adding 300 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes!
BMW’s throwing its weight behind bidirectional charging with the Neue Klasse X. This means your car can power e-bikes (vehicle-to-load), your entire home (vehicle-to-home), or even feed energy back into the grid (vehicle-to-grid). Home power is the first stage, requiring a special DC Wallbox, while grid integration will require a partnership with energy providers and regulatory approval.
Styling-wise, the Neue Klasse X evolves the sedan’s sleek lines. It introduces a new front fascia for BMW’s X models, featuring a narrower, vertically oriented kidney grille and distinctive lighting. 3D-printed rear lights add a high-tech touch. The real showstopper is inside: a redesigned steering wheel, touch-centric central display, and BMW’s “Panoramic Vision” mega-sized windshield heads-up display.
BMW brags about a 20% aero drag improvement over current SUVs, thanks to new design and tire tech. Brake system upgrades also promise a 25% efficiency boost.
“The Neue Klasse reflects the variety of all the models that customers want today and in the future,” says BMW’s Oliver Zipse. It’s a clear signal: BMW’s not just electrifying, they’re reinventing. The Neue Klasse X showcases cutting-edge tech, efficiency-focused design, and a user experience that redefines what it means to drive a BMW.
BMW is promising that the Neue Klasse crossover will go into production in 2025.
