Bluesky, the decentralized social media platform, has rolled out a new update that expands its video capabilities and introduces features designed to improve the user experience.
The update increases the maximum video upload length to 3 minutes, a significant increase from the previous 1-minute limit. This change provides greater flexibility for video creators and is likely to be welcomed by users of Flashes, a photo and video app built on the Bluesky platform.
In addition to enhanced video capabilities, the update addresses the issue of unwanted messages by adding new inbox management tools. Direct messages now include a “requests” section for messages from unknown users, and users have the option to reject incoming chats, helping to reduce spam.
This update coincides with Bluesky CEO Jay Graber’s keynote address at the SXSW festival, where she discussed the platform’s growth and future plans. Graber highlighted Bluesky’s decentralized nature, emphasizing its resilience against external influences and its ability to adapt to user preferences.
She also touched on potential business models for Bluesky, including subscriptions and paid developer services. Additionally, Graber mentioned the possibility of creating a marketplace for features like moderation services and custom feeds.
Regarding the use of artificial intelligence, Graber stated that Bluesky is working with partners to develop a framework for user consent in relation to the use of data for generative AI.
