Last month, during WWDC 2024, Apple announced a significant upgrade to its operating systems with the integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT service into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. While Apple’s own Apple Intelligence capabilities will handle simple user queries, more complex questions will be directed to ChatGPT for its advanced expertise. iOS users will also have the ability to send documents or photos along with their queries to ChatGPT for detailed answers.
In addition to this integration, ChatGPT will be accessible through Apple’s systemwide Writing Tools, enabling users to generate text content as needed. Furthermore, ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities will allow users to create context-relevant images.
In a new report from Bloomberg, it has been revealed that Apple is collaborating with Google to integrate Gemini, Google’s AI chatbot, into iOS later this year. This integration is expected to be part of the Apple Intelligence launch this fall, with rumors suggesting a formal announcement will be made around that time.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman writes:
“As for an Apple deal with Google or Anthropic, I expect at least the former to be announced around the time Apple Intelligence launches this fall.”
Additionally, Apple is reportedly working with Anthropic on a similar integration. This development follows a previous Bloomberg report which indicated that Apple’s partnership with OpenAI for ChatGPT integration is non-exclusive and does not involve any financial transactions.
Bloomberg also confirmed that Apple and Meta are unlikely to partner on integrating Meta’s Llama chatbot into Apple devices. Despite brief discussions initiated by Meta in March, Apple’s concerns about Meta’s privacy practices have played a significant role in this decision. Apple has been a vocal critic of Meta’s approach to privacy, and integrating Meta’s AI service would contradict its stance. Moreover, Apple believes that OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic currently offer superior AI capabilities compared to Meta.
