Apple CarPlay 2 delayed, but not abandoned

Apple’s next-generation CarPlay, known as CarPlay 2, has faced unexpected delays, but the project remains active. Initially promised to arrive in vehicles by 2024, CarPlay 2 is now expected to launch later, with Apple focusing on refining the experience and collaborating with car manufacturers for deeper integration.

CarPlay 2, previewed at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in 2022, promises a significant upgrade to the in-car experience. It will offer support for multiple screens, including the instrument cluster, and provide more advanced widgets for popular apps. Recent iOS 18.2 beta releases have also revealed design changes, such as new icons for climate and media controls.

Apple envisions CarPlay 2 as a seamless extension of the iPhone experience within the car. It aims to provide a cohesive design across all driver screens, with customization options and deeper integration with vehicle functions.

The delay in CarPlay 2’s launch is likely due to Apple’s focus on tailoring the experience for each vehicle model. This involves close collaboration with car manufacturers to ensure a bespoke interface that complements the car’s design and brand identity.

While the exact features and capabilities of CarPlay 2 are still under wraps, it is expected to include integration with Apple Intelligence and AI-driven features. As Apple continues to develop CarPlay 2, it is poised to redefine the in-car experience, offering users a more personalized and integrated way to interact with their iPhones while on the road.
