Google unveiled a suite of new security features for their second Android 15 beta, designed to safeguard your phone even if stolen. Theft Detection Lock, a standout feature, recognizes suspicious motions like a phone being snatched and automatically locks the screen. The system also locks the device if a thief tries to disconnect it from the network.
Users can now remotely lock their phone via android.com/lock if it gets lost or stolen, simply by entering their phone number and completing a security challenge. These features will roll out later this year through a Google Play services update for phones running Android 10 or later.
Android 15 also introduces “private spaces” for hiding sensitive apps and data, and enhanced security for forced resets, requiring owner credentials for setup. Google Play Protect gets an AI-powered upgrade, scanning apps for signs of phishing and fraud without collecting data. This feature will be available on select phone models later this year.
While Android 15 itself received less attention at Google I/O, the focus on bringing new features to a wider range of Android devices is a welcome change. We can expect more details about Android 15’s features in the coming months as it progresses through its beta phase.
