The tablet market is a fascinating space. It’s a battleground where innovation meets practicality, where manufacturers constantly strive to deliver the perfect blend of performance, features, and affordability. In this dynamic landscape, Lenovo has consistently been a key player, pushing boundaries and challenging expectations. With the highly anticipated successor to the popular Tab P12, Lenovo has once again raised the bar with the Idea Tab Pro. This device, unveiled at CES 2025, has generated considerable buzz, promising a compelling combination of power and value.

The Lenovo Idea Tab Pro arrives with a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor at its core, 8GB of RAM to handle multitasking with ease, and ample storage to accommodate your digital life. All of this is offered at an attractive price point of $370, immediately positioning the Idea Tab Pro as a strong contender in the mid-range tablet market. The anticipation surrounding this tablet is palpable, and for good reason. It sparks a crucial question: How does it stack up against its competitors?   

The initial impressions of the Idea Tab Pro are nothing short of intriguing. In certain tests, it seems to defy expectations, delivering performance that rivals devices in a much higher price bracket. This is the kind of performance that makes you pause and question the very definition of “mid-range.” To provide a comprehensive understanding of this tablet’s capabilities, we’ve put it through rigorous testing. So, let’s delve into the details and explore what the Lenovo Idea Tab Pro has to offer.

Design & Build: Sleek and Comfortable

The Idea Tab Pro is a large tablet, measuring 11.5 inches by 7.45 inches. Its expansive display provides ample screen real estate for immersive viewing and productive multitasking. The front of the tablet is minimalist, with a selfie camera being the only noticeable feature aside from the large display.

The tablet features a design with flat edges, a popular aesthetic choice in recent years. However, despite the flat edges, the Idea Tab Pro is surprisingly comfortable to hold. This is likely due to the thicker 6.9mm sides, which provide a more secure grip. While some users might prefer thinner profiles, the 6.9mm thickness strikes a good balance between portability and ergonomics.

The volume rocker is located on the horizontal top side of the Idea Tab Pro. On the left side, you’ll find the power button, which also houses an integrated fingerprint reader. This fingerprint reader works exceptionally well, providing fast and reliable biometric authentication. A MicroSD card slot is also located on the left side, supporting cards up to 1TB in capacity. This expandable storage option is a valuable addition, allowing users to store a vast library of media files, documents, and applications.   

In addition to the fingerprint reader, the Idea Tab Pro also offers the option of setting up face unlock using the selfie camera. While convenient, it’s important to note that this face unlock system relies on a single camera setup and lacks the advanced IR scanning security features found in some higher-end devices. Therefore, if you plan to use this tablet for sensitive activities such as banking or storing important personal files, it’s advisable to stick with the fingerprint reader or a traditional password/passcode for enhanced security. However, for general use, the face unlock works well and provides a convenient alternative to the fingerprint reader.

On the right side of the tablet, you’ll find the USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port. This port serves multiple purposes, including charging, data transfer, and even HDMI output for connecting to an external monitor. The port supports charging up to 45 watts, which is a fairly standard charging speed for tablets these days.

The entire backside of the Idea Tab Pro features a pleasant metal coating, providing a premium feel and adding to the tablet’s overall durability. A standard Lenovo logo is prominently displayed in the center. The build quality of the Idea Tab Pro is on par with its competitors in the mid-range segment. It feels solid and well-constructed, capable of withstanding the rigors of daily use.

Display: A Tale of Two Halves

Lenovo markets the Idea Tab Pro’s 12.7-inch 3K LCD display as capable of producing “captivating pictures.” While the specifications, such as the 144Hz variable refresh rate and 273 ppi pixel density, sound promising on paper, the actual performance of the display reveals some significant limitations.

The most notable drawback is the peak brightness of 400 nits. In well-lit indoor environments, the display is usable, albeit somewhat dim. However, in bright outdoor settings, it becomes challenging to view the screen clearly. Even the Redmi Pad Pro, which is significantly more affordable, boasts a peak brightness of 600 nits. This difference in brightness can significantly impact the viewing experience, particularly for users who frequently use their tablets outdoors.

One positive aspect of the Idea Tab Pro’s display is its ability to produce deep blacks compared to other LCD tablets at peak brightness. This is primarily due to the low brightness, which enhances the perceived contrast. However, this comes at the cost of overall brightness, which can be a significant trade-off for many users.

Performance: A Powerhouse in the Mid-Range

One of the most significant advancements the Idea Tab Pro brings over the Tab P12 is undoubtedly the sheer leap in performance. The MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor, the heart of this tablet, packs a serious punch. At this price point, it’s difficult to find a tablet that can even come close to matching its performance. The only notable exception might be the Apple iPad 10th generation, a device known for its own performance prowess.

The inclusion of 8GB of DDR5X RAM further enhances the tablet’s capabilities, providing ample memory for seamless multitasking, allowing users to switch between applications without experiencing lag or slowdown. It also ensures smooth and responsive gaming, even when tackling graphically demanding titles. Storage options for the Idea Tab Pro are generous, with a base configuration of 128GB and an upgrade to 256GB available for a mere $20 more directly from Lenovo. This flexibility caters to users with varying storage needs, whether they require ample space for media files, documents, or applications.

To quantify the performance improvements, we turned to benchmark tests. In Geekbench, a widely used benchmark that measures CPU performance, the Idea Tab Pro demonstrated remarkable gains. We observed approximately a 40% increase in CPU single-core performance compared to the Tab P12, which is a substantial upgrade in itself. However, the multi-core performance showed an even more impressive leap, with scores nearly doubling those of its predecessor. These results were so striking that we almost had to double-check them to ensure their accuracy.

Geekbench’s GPU testing further highlighted the capabilities of the Dimensity 8300. The Idea Tab Pro achieved nearly triple the score of the Tab P12, a testament to the significant improvements in graphics processing. Interestingly, the Idea Tab Pro’s GPU performance was only about 20% lower than that of the premium Samsung Galaxy Tab S9, which is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a flagship processor known for its graphics prowess. This close comparison further solidifies the Idea Tab Pro’s position as a performance leader in its class.

Gaming Performance: Smooth and Immersive

Given the impressive performance figures in benchmarks, it’s no surprise that the Idea Tab Pro excels in gaming. The Dimensity 8300 processor provides the necessary power to handle even the most demanding games with ease. During our testing, we experienced virtually no issues running popular titles like Fortnite and Genshin Impact, both of which are known for their graphical intensity.

However, when it comes to Fortnite, pushing the graphics settings to their absolute maximum can lead to some performance compromises. When we set the preset to Epic and the 3D resolution to 100%, we observed an average frame rate of around 30 FPS, which is generally considered the minimum for a smooth gaming experience. In some instances, the frame rate dipped as low as 15 FPS, which can result in noticeable stuttering and lag, particularly during intense action sequences.

For a more playable and competitive experience in Fortnite, it’s necessary to lower the graphics preset to Medium and reduce the 3D resolution. This adjustment allows for a smoother frame rate and a more responsive gaming experience. It’s worth noting that Fortnite appears to be capped at 30 FPS on this tablet, regardless of the settings used. This limitation might be a factor to consider for gamers who prioritize high frame rates.

On the other hand, PUBG Mobile runs flawlessly on the Idea Tab Pro. At the maximum supported HDR preset, we consistently achieved an average frame rate of 40 FPS, providing a smooth and visually appealing gaming experience. By uncapping the refresh rate in the display settings, PUBG Mobile can even run at a stable 90 FPS at the “Smooth” preset with 4x MSAA antialiasing. This higher frame rate enhances the fluidity of the gameplay, making it more responsive and immersive.

Thermals are also well-managed on the Idea Tab Pro. Throughout our gaming sessions, the tablet remained cool and comfortable to hold, even during extended periods of gameplay. This is a crucial factor for gamers, as overheating can lead to performance throttling and discomfort. The Idea Tab Pro’s efficient thermal management contributes to a more enjoyable and consistent gaming experience.

Lenovo Tab Pen Plus: A Useful Inclusion

The Lenovo Idea Tab Pro comes bundled with the Lenovo Tab Pen Plus, a welcome addition that enhances the tablet’s versatility. The pen charges via USB-C, and its battery life is commendable, offering up to 35 hours of usage on a single charge.

Ergonomically, the Tab Pen Plus feels comfortable to hold and use. Lenovo has also incorporated several useful features, such as the ability to pause videos or music playback using the pen. The option to use the pen as a remote control is a neat addition, although there is a noticeable delay between pressing a button on the pen and the corresponding action registering on the tablet.

Considering that Lenovo includes the pen with the tablet, it’s difficult to find fault with its functionality. However, there are a few areas where improvements could be made. The pen tip could be softer for quieter writing, and magnetic wireless charging through the tablet would be a convenient feature.

Speakers: A Sonic Delight

Lenovo has a reputation for equipping its tablets with excellent speakers, and the Idea Tab Pro is no exception. The quad stereo JBL speakers, enhanced with Dolby Atmos support, produce an impressive audio experience.

These speakers are undoubtedly among the best in their price range. They deliver rich, clear, and immersive sound that enhances the enjoyment of movies, music, and games. The sound experience on the Idea Tab Pro is truly exceptional, making it a standout feature of the tablet.

Software

Delving deeper into the software experience of the Lenovo Idea Tab Pro reveals a nuanced picture, one that showcases both the strengths and the limitations of Lenovo’s approach. At the heart of the user interface lies Lenovo’s ZUI, a customized layer built upon Android 14. This adaptation is clearly designed with the tablet’s expansive screen in mind, offering a suite of features that enhance productivity and multitasking.

One of the most notable aspects of ZUI is its ability to display multiple applications simultaneously in windows. This functionality transforms the Idea Tab Pro into a veritable workstation, allowing users to seamlessly manage various tasks without constantly switching between apps. The system intelligently adapts when a mouse and keyboard are connected, automatically shifting into a mode optimized for this input method. This transition enhances the user experience, making the tablet feel more like a traditional desktop or laptop.

A consistently visible taskbar further streamlines navigation and application launching, providing quick access to frequently used apps, regardless of the current screen. This feature is particularly beneficial for users who rely on a consistent workflow, as it minimizes the need to return to the home screen.

However, the ZUI experience is not without its imperfections. While the system is generally well-optimized for the large screen, not all applications are equally compatible. Some programs may exhibit control elements that are obscured or rendered inaccessible, which can hinder usability. This inconsistency highlights the ongoing challenge of adapting software to the diverse range of applications available on the Android platform.

The software on our test device is built upon Android 14, providing a solid foundation for the tablet’s functionality. Lenovo has committed to providing security updates until September 2028, translating to just under three and a half years of support from the time of testing. Furthermore, new Android versions will be available up to Android 17.

As with many Android devices, the Idea Tab Pro comes pre-installed with a selection of sponsored applications. While this bloatware is a common occurrence, it’s easily remedied, as these apps can be readily deleted. This minor inconvenience does little to detract from the overall software experience, particularly given the strengths of ZUI and the underlying Android 14 platform.

Additional Features: AI and Connectivity

Lenovo has incorporated several AI-powered features into the Idea Tab Pro, including Google’s Circle to Search and the Google Gemini AI voice assistant. These features function as expected and can be useful in certain situations.

The most notable feature is “Smart Connect,” which allows the tablet to connect to a laptop or desktop via USB or Wi-Fi. This feature enables file sharing and the ability to use the tablet as an external monitor.

The ability to mirror the PC’s display or use the tablet as a second monitor is a valuable addition. The low input lag and minimal freezing make it feasible to use the tablet as a drawing tablet with applications like Photoshop or OneNote. The ability to stream applications from the tablet to a laptop display is another useful feature, allowing users to leverage the Idea Tab Pro’s processing power on a larger screen. The front camera can also be used as a webcam.

Battery Life:

Battery life is one area where the Idea Tab Pro presents a mixed bag. While it packs a large 10200mAh battery, which would typically suggest long-lasting performance, the actual battery life is somewhat mediocre.

Charging is relatively fast, thanks to the 45-watt charging support. This charging speed is comparable to that of competitors like Samsung and Apple. It takes a little under 2 hours to fully charge the tablet from 0% battery, which is a reasonable charging time for a device with such a large battery. It’s worth noting that the tablet does not come with an included power brick, so you’ll need to use your own or purchase one separately.   

In our battery life tests, the Idea Tab Pro achieved approximately 8 hours of continuous YouTube playback with peak brightness in HD resolution. While this is not necessarily a bad result, it’s not particularly impressive either, especially considering the large battery capacity.

Final Verdict: A Mid-Range Marvel

The Lenovo Idea Tab Pro is an exceptional tablet that delivers remarkable value for its price. It offers performance and features that are typically found in more expensive devices.

Gamers seeking even higher performance might consider the OnePlus Pad 2, if available in their region, but the Idea Tab Pro offers a compelling balance of performance and affordability.

The tablet’s strengths include its powerful performance, included pen, and excellent speakers. Its weaknesses are its dim display and mediocre battery life. The Lenovo Idea Tab Pro offers tremendous value and performance for its price. While the display and battery life could be improved, its strengths in performance, speakers, and included pen make it a standout choice in the mid-range tablet market.
