My first handheld was Sega’s Game Gear while growing up, with of course Sonic as my first game as well, so naturally, this got me all excited!
Sonic Origins Plus is an upgraded version of Sonic Origins that includes 12 Sega Game Gear games, as well as new playable characters, game modes, and features. The new content is a mixed bag to be honest, but surely brings back some great memories for Game Gear fans.
The new playable characters, Amy Rose and Tails, are a welcome addition to the collection, and offer new strategies for completing the games. The new game modes, Classic and Anniversary, are also a nice touch. Classic mode offers a more faithful recreation of the original games, while Anniversary mode adds new features like widescreen support and infinite lives. You can also now play as Knuckles in Sonic CD.
However, the new Game Gear games are a bit disappointing, they mainly are a replica of the original Game Gear versions, and suffer from the same issues. The sound, graphics, and frame rate are all very choppy. Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble and Tails’ Adventure, are actually good. Others, like Sonic Labyrinth and Tails’ Skypatrol, are more mediocre. Overall, these games won’t be really played for long, and users would get bored fairly quickly.
Overall, Sonic Origins Plus is a nice update for fans of the series, but it is not enough to make the collection a must-buy in my opinion.
