The bottom edge of the phone features microphone and speaker perforations, along with a USB-C port that, with the right cable, can support Thunderbolt 4 data-transfer speeds. There’s also a speaker slot along the very top edge of the display.Together with the bottom edge speaker, this phone can produce undistorted, room-filling sound – highs are sharp, mids are strong, and bass is surprisingly good for the device size. Apple’s commitment to audio quality is evident, ensuring an immersive experience whether you’re listening to music, watching videos, or gaming.

Button placement is mostly identical to last year, with the volume buttons and Action Button on one side and the larger power/sleep/Siri button on the other. The new Camera Control, however, is a standout addition. Roughly the same size as the power button, the Camera Control is a multipurpose control that can recognize physical presses, and lighter pressure to enable haptic response and gestures. It offers instant access to the camera and, with those other presses and gestures, to various virtual millimeter lenses and camera settings. Camera Control replaces the old antenna cutout on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and it’s recessed, so there’s little chance of accidentally triggering it.

The materials and build quality are, as expected from Apple, exceptional. The grade 5 titanium body, coupled with a graphite-clad aluminum substructure, not only exudes luxury but also contributes to heat dissipation and improved efficiency. The ceramic shield has also been upgraded, potentially making it less susceptible to cracks and scratches.While I exercised caution during my testing, the phone’s IP68 rating ensures peace of mind even in wet conditions. I deliberately subjected the phone to a garden sprinkler, and it emerged unscathed, with the water droplets playfully interacting with the touchscreen.

A Visual Feast: The iPhone 16 Pro Max’s Display

Apple’s Super Retina XDR display technology continues to reign supreme in the smartphone world. While the core specs remain largely unchanged from the previous generation, they’re still worth celebrating. The iPhone 16 Pro Max boasts a massive 6.9-inch screen, achieved through a combination of a slightly larger chassis and slimmer bezels. The resolution has also been bumped up to 2868 x 1320 pixels, resulting in a sharper image. While the pixel density remains at 460ppi,falling slightly behind some competitors, the difference is barely noticeable in real-world use.

The Dynamic Island, introduced last year, remains a fixture in the upper portion of the screen. It houses Face ID, depth sensors, and a 12MP TrueDepth camera, which takes excellent selfies and serves as my preferred method of biometric unlocking. The Dynamic Island’s seamless integration into the display and its ability to adapt to various tasks make it a truly innovative and useful feature.

The display’s wide color gamut, HDR support, True Tone technology, and always-on functionality ensure a visually stunning experience in any lighting condition. With a peak brightness of 2,000 nits outdoors, the iPhone 16 Pro Max effortlessly combats direct sunlight, making it easy to view even in the brightest environments. ProMotion technology,which dynamically adjusts the refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz, delivers buttery-smooth scrolling, gaming, and video playback.

Software and Apple Intelligence: The Brains Behind the Brawn

While Apple Intelligence is undoubtedly the most talked-about feature of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, it’s the changes to the core iOS 18 platform that will have the most immediate impact on your day-to-day use. The Photos app, for instance, has received a significant overhaul, with a focus on Search and Collections. While this might initially disorient users accustomed to the previous layout, the enhanced search capabilities, powered by natural language processing, make it easier than ever to find specific photos or groups of images.

While Apple hasn’t radically changed the iPhone’s camera array, there are enough changes in hardware, software, and image processing, along with the aforementioned Camera Control, to make the imaging system feel fresh and new.

The 48MP ultrawide camera is the most significant hardware upgrade, promising improved wide-angle shots and enhanced macro photography. While the main camera’s megapixel count remains unchanged, the upgraded sensor and faster shutter speeds should result in noticeable improvements in image quality and capture speed. The 12MP 5x optical zoom lens remains the same, but its inclusion in the smaller iPhone 16 Pro is a welcome addition.

The 48MP Ultra Wide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro Max takes macro photography to the next level, capturing incredible detail from as close as 2 cm. To maximize resolution, enable Apple ProRAW & Resolution Control in Camera settings and select ProRAW Max or HEIF Max as your default. When shooting macro with the Ultra Wide camera at 0.5x framing, tap ProRAW or HEIF Max in the top right corner and get close to your subject. You’ll also experience improved quality when using the 1x (24mm) framing.
