When a studio trusts the source content, the previous world building, the audience and just has fun with it, you get Deadpool & Wolverine.
Deadpool & Wolverine
One thing we can rely on Marvel for is good effects and great visuals overall. Deadpool & Wolverine did not disappoint. From some amazing slow-mo shots, to well timed action sequences that matched the beat of the song, you are treated to a visual spectacle for almost the entirety of the movie.
Making an enjoyable, gruesome, hilarious, painful, bloody fight scene to the sound of Nsync’s Bye Bye Bye is a stroke of genius. It being a highlight of the movie is a testament to Ryan Renold’s acting, the directing, the writing, the VFX and the overall production of this movie. And that is just the start of the movie.
For the rest of the movie, you are in for a treat. The story doesn’t feel stagnant at any point, with some hard hitting moments enveloped with quippy dialogues delivered in the comical style of Ryan Renolds or the brutish style of Hugh Jackman. Both characters had some great onscreen chemistry mixed in with some amazing cameos in ways that you may or may not expect.
There are a couple of moments when the movie falls short. Without giving too much away, the fight scene with a bunch of different people had too many cuts, and the scene right after the exit the bus. The former was a mess, cut up to pieces with no context of what was going on. This was especially annoying because there some great fight scenes, long shots and with cuts that were done to perfection, this was not one of them. The latter was one of the only points where you are visually separated from the film because the VFX was downright terrible. Baring these two moments, the rest of the movie was stellar.
One thing to remember is that you will have to do some homework before going for this movie. Ideally you should have watched Deadpool and Deadpool 2, along with Logan and at least the first season of Loki. Otherwise there will be parts that are quite confusing. This is a lot to ask for from the audience, but as someone who had kept up to date with all of Marvel and Disney content, it was a great way to tie in everything together in a way that was both on brand but also unaffected by other content.
A rare time when the Multiverse and Time Jumping works in favour of the plot.
Head on over to an IMAX theater, because that is one of the best ways to enjoy this movie. Strap in and enjoy the ride. Marvel is back!
P.S. Can’t believe a Disney movie has soo much violence and “flowery” language. But I’m all for it!
