OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G Review

The OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G is OPPO’s latest flagship. Slick design, beefy cameras, big battery and specs. While the phone came out a few months ago, let’s see if it still stacks up against the other flash-ships out there.

Design

The Reno7 Pro is a beautiful phone. While a regular slab style, it does follow Apple’s flat sides aesthetic. You get chamfered edges and even a small indent in the power button which has a different colour.

The back of the phone has this very cool shine to it, while the colour keeps shifting around so it isn’t any specific colour. A really cool look, again nothing unique, but it still does look nice.

You get a USB-C port and speaker grill at the bottom, along with the simcard tray.

The camera bump is pretty sizable, but it has a cool trick which makes it worth it. There is a LED that is all around the side of the camera bump. It lights up when you charge the phone, but you can choose a few options in the settings to configure it. Really cool use of the space there. Probably one of the best camera bumps yet. This is probably the most outstanding design element.

Display & Speakers

The display is a 6.5inch 90Hz 1080 x 2400 (409 dpi) AMOLED panel that supports HDR10+. While for some the less than 120Hz is a dealbreaker, for me it isn’t. The phone felt plenty smooth and the lower frequency only helps with battery life.

The screen get bright enough for most people. But whatever brightness you sacrifice is more than made up for by the lovely colours and crispness.

You have a hole punch on the top left for the selfie camera, and you have an underglass fingerprint reader.

The Reno7 Pro has a set of stereo speakers, which are good enough in a pinch, but they are not the loudest. Though they are pretty clear and not as tiny as other phones.

Performance & OS

The OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G has the following specs:

  • 8 Core CPU – MediaTek Dimensity 1200 Max
  • 256GB Storage
  • 12GB RAM
  • Android 11 with Color OS

The Reno7 Pro is extremely powerful. You get enough performance to run any/all apps that you would want.

It ran games and apps smoothly and we never felt like the phone was lacking in this department.

Color OS is very feature packed and has a nice design as well. With the custom LED, to extend RAM to your storage, to performance management and other minor tweaks and adjustments, there is a lot to explore. Having said that, Color OS does seem a bit bloated, and probably needs streamlining. Some unnecessary extra apps can be offloaded and the default android/google onces can be used. Still not a bad overall experience. Though on a design level I’m not a fan of the icons, the rest of the UI is pretty great.

Here are the benchmarks we ran:

Battery

The OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G has a 4500 mAh battery. This is quite a sizable battery. You also get the 67W Super-VOOC charger in the box. Yes! A flagship that includes a charger.

The Reno7 Pro can definitely last you the whole day and then some on regular to light usage. But if you push the phone, with games or heavy screen usage, the battery does drain. The phone also can get hot.

The Super-VOOC charger is pretty brilliant. It took us just over 30 minutes to charge the phone from almost dead to 100%. That is pretty epic and means even if your phone does drain, you can get it juiced up and ready to go in no time.

Camera

The OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G has a pretty great camera setup:

  • 50MP primary
  • 8MP ultra-wide
  • 2MP macro
  • 32MP front-facing

The front camera has a bunch of AI features which can help you change your face into a more commercially acceptable face. Whatever that may be.

The rear camera has pretty good colour accuracy and dynamic range. The wide angle lens does feel a bit more washed out than the primary lens, but other than that they are all pretty good.

The primary camera serves as 2x optical zoom while the phone also has up to 20x digital zoom.

Summary

The OPPO Reno7 Pro 5G is a great looking all rounder phone that can keep pace with competing flagships. While not the best value option available, there are very few phones that look this good. There are also some unique features in the Reno7 Pro that make it stand out. If those apply to you, then this phone would be a great companion for the next few years.
