I was a big fan of Nokia & with my first phone being a Nokia, it also has a special place in my heart. I could not pass up a chance to critique the new Nokia 7.2 from HMD & relive the nostalgia.
Camera
The device has three cameras. The first being a 48-megapixel primary camera, the second an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera & the third a 5-megapixel depth sensor.
I liked the video recording quality of the primary camera at 4k & 1080p; however, when you switch to the wide-angle lens, you can’t zoom.
Night mode had a strange filter on it compared to normal mode.
The photo quality is pretty good for the primary & selfie camera.
The portrait mode has room for improvement with lots of noise in the pictures below.
Display
The display is a 1080 x 2280 6.3 inch IPS LCD-display with a pixel density of 400 pixels per inch. The Nokia 7.2 also supports HDR10, which is something you notice while consuming content.
Build
The Nokia 7.2 feels very premium with a solid front & rear glass build. The frame feels like metal but is actually plastic which would explain its weight at just 180 grams . The build is very durable but expect it to be a fingerprint magnet with the front and rear glass. Although the 7.2 has a notch, I have over time learned to accept it.
Security
The 7.2 has many security features such as face unlock & a fingerprint scanner at the back. The face unlock is a bit slow.
While the positioning of the fingerprint scanner feels weird with my small hands, it is super fast. I would love to see if the next generation can add an in-screen fingerprint scanner.
There are also three years of security updates on the device, so I would not worry about any security issues for a while. It is also part of the Android One program however more on that in the software and performance section.
Battery
I was expecting a lot less battery life with the 3,500 mAH battery, but I was able to get past a day of usage while using 4G & the brightness at 50%. I even managed to sneak in some gaming in my day.
The charger included is a 10-watt charger, so nothing special here. It takes roughly two hours for a full charge.
Software and Performance
The device has Google’s latest version of Android 9.0 Pie with the promise of an upgrade to 10.0 very soon. It is also part of the Android One program, which means that our device runs a stock version of android and cannot be altered.
The Snapdragon 660 feels a bit outdated for a device in 2019, but it runs like a champ. I had no lag or issues when comparing the performance to my iphone 8 plus.
The configuration we tested had 6gb of ram. It was plenty for playing games such as clash of clans or watching some videos on Netflix.
There is plenty of storage on the Nokia 7.2 with 128 gigabyte of inbuilt storage. There is also a micro-sd card option to expand storage up to 512 gigabyte if you are a power user.
I would highly recommend enabling the developer options and setting night mode on which will give you a darker version of the UI, but it is not as extensive as dark-mode coming in Android 10.
Speakers
Speakers are a part of the device I feel could be improved upon. The audio tears when it is set to the maximum. The call quality is clear when outdoors.
Thankfully the Nokia 7.2 retains a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is always a welcomed addition.
Final Verdict
The Nokia 7.2 is an excellent device for the low-medium priced segment and does many things well. I would even recommend it over some flagships based on the user experience alone however the hardware has room for improvement.
