My first hands-on experience flying a drone

I’m sure we’ve all seen some really cool shots taken from drones and these definitely offer a unique perspective as compared to regular photography or videography. I hadn’t quite flown a drone before until this day when I got a chance to do a certification course from Sanad Academy where we got some interesting insights about drones and flew the DJI Mavic Mini.

It started with some theory where we learnt about the various types of drones, and the fact that they’re called RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems).

We also learnt about the various parts of a drone and the basics of how it is assembled so that it can fly. There are certain good practices that Sanad Academy gave us insights on and you can read about it here.

In the UAE, there are two main governing authorities concerning drones; one is the DCAA (which mainly concerns Dubai), and the other is the GCAA (which controls the rest of UAE). They also told us about the procedure to acquire a drone license if you want to fly a drone. You can register your drone here under the GCAA.

Once we got to know about the basic controls of the drone, we practiced on the drone simulators which they had and it was fun.

Now it was time to do some outdoor flying. We connected the drones to our phones, got to know about what the various lights on the drones signify, some basic tips on how to take-off and land, and then we started flying. It was the DJI Mavic Mini that we flew. It is a great drone for content creators. The Mavic Mini weighs just 249 grams which is the safest drone category. It has 30 minutes of flying time.

Flying the DJI Mavic Mini was a great experience. We also learnt how to fly the drone in a circular motion and some other tips and tricks. At the end of the course we got a drone flying certificate from Sanad Academy which would be helpful to get a drone flying license.

Here’s some drone footage from our experience at Sanad Academy.

If you’re interested in buying a drone, you can have a look at this document which will give you some more information about various DJI drones.
