Okay, maybe that title is a tad dramatic, but hear me out. As someone obsessed with gadgets and plagued by untamable hair, the whole “wet-to-dry straightener” concept has been blowing my mind. With Dyson throwing its hat in the ring with the Airstrait, I’ve decided to take dive and see what the fuss is all about.
Dyson’s been the king of the high-end hair care game ever since its Supersonic hairdryer hit the scene. The Corrale straightener and the Airwrap curler only solidified their reputation. But the Airstrait? Now that’s their most exciting product yet – at least in my book.
The premise is mind-boggling: take soaking wet hair and simultaneously dry and straighten it with just air, no scorching-hot plates? Sign me up!
Let’s be real, the AED1,999.00 price tag screams “luxury.” But before you faint, consider this: it’s STILL cheaper than buying both the Supersonic and Corrale. So, if the Airstrait can replace both those tools, that hefty price tag suddenly feels a whole lot more reasonable… right?
SPOILER ALERT: It absolutely CAN!
Before We Start
To really get a feel for the Airstrait’s potential, I took advantage of Dyson’s in-store styling experience with Sebastian Iskander, lead stylist at Dyson. Sebastian washed my hair and then took me through the whole process, showing me the optimal way to section my hair and how to achieve the smoothest results. It was incredibly helpful, especially since this tool is unlike anything I’ve used before! The hands-on demo not only solidified my love for the Airstrait but also gave me the confidence to recreate those salon-worthy styles at home.
Gorgeous Design, Premium Feel
Dyson knows how to make a product that exudes both techiness and style. The Airstrait’s nickel and copper color scheme? Total win. And the craftsmanship, as always, is top-notch. It feels substantial in your hand, with a satisfying “click” to the buttons on the handle. No complaints here. The five control buttons are also couplers with a little LCD that confirms your selection.
Those copper bits that stick out? They’re diffusers. Their mission: distribute the airflow evenly and prevent that burning sensation you sometimes get with other styling tools. Believe me, as someone with a sensitive scalp, I give this feature a standing ovation.
I also appreciate the clever design features, like the auto-pause that kicks in if you set it down for more than three seconds.
How Does It Work?
So, how exactly does this thing go from wet-to-style in a flash? Partly, it’s down to the crazy-powerful Hyperdymium motor tucked into the handle. This little beast spins at a mind-blowing 106,000rpm, blasting almost twelve litres of air through the tool every single second.
Then there are the two 1.5mm apertures that run along the arms. These act like tiny jet engines, accelerating the airflow even further and creating focused beams of air. This is where the magic happens – those high-speed air currents do the heavy lifting, drying and straightening your hair all at once. It’s almost like having a tiny but incredibly efficient hair salon built into your straightener.
And, because this is Dyson we’re talking about, there’s the intelligent heat control we’ve come to know and love. The Airstrait measures airflow temperature 30 times a second, ensuring it never gets scorching hot. Less heat = less damage = healthier, shinier hair.
Okay, But Does It Actually Work?
Short answer: YES! Long answer: It’s a surprisingly intuitive tool. Both the sound and the sensation of the airflow let you know it’s actively working its magic. There are pre-set drying and styling modes, plus a cool shot to lock in your style.
In wet mode, I opted for maximum heat (my hair is thick). But those with finer, more delicate hair have gentler heat settings to choose from. Same goes for dry mode! Being able to customize the experience is a huge plus.
As someone who normally dedicates a good chunk of her time to blow-drying and then flat-ironing, the Airstrait has been a lifesaver. But what truly astonished me was how soft, healthy, and frizz-free my hair felt afterward. Not only that, but my style actually held for multiple days – something virtually unheard of for my unruly waves. Even a quick refresh with the Airstrait on day 3 had my hair looking as good as after a full-on styling session with my old tools.

The Verdict: Am I a Convert?
The Dyson Airstrait is, without a doubt, a premium piece of kit. The price point might make some people hesitate. But honestly? If you’re like me and currently own a quality hairdryer AND a straightener, the Airstrait might actually be the more cost-effective option. The Airstrait could potentially save you money down the line. With proper care, this Dyson tool is built to last.
