Game & Watch is a line of handheld electronic games produced by Nintendo from 1980 to 1991. The series was created by Gunpei Yokoi, who was also responsible for designing the Game Boy and other Nintendo hardware.
The first Game & Watch game was released in April 1980 in Japan, and it was called “Ball.” The game featured a simple LCD display that showed a black-and-white image of a ball bouncing between two paddles. The player had to move the paddles to keep the ball in play and avoid dropping it.

Over the next decade, Nintendo released dozens of different Game & Watch games, each with their own unique gameplay and graphics. Some of the most popular titles included “Donkey Kong,” “Mario Bros.,” “Zelda,” and “Tetris.”

The Game & Watch series was notable for its innovative design and portability. Each game was housed in a small plastic case with a built-in LCD screen, making it easy to take on the go. The games also featured a simple control scheme, typically consisting of just two or three buttons.
Despite its popularity, the Game & Watch series was eventually phased out in favor of more advanced handheld gaming systems, such as the Game Boy and later the Nintendo DS. However, the Game & Watch series remains a beloved part of Nintendo’s history and is often cited as an early precursor to modern handheld gaming devices. In 2020, Nintendo released a new Game & Watch device that included several classic games from the series, as well as a clock and other features.
