ChatGPT has unveiled a new “Deep Research” tool designed to accelerate the creation of comprehensive research reports. This feature promises to significantly reduce the time required for in-depth research, potentially completing projects that would take hours for a human analyst in a matter of minutes.
“Deep Research” is tailored for knowledge workers and anyone undertaking projects requiring extensive research. It can compile and synthesize information from numerous online sources to produce detailed reports “at the level of a research analyst,” according to OpenAI. Beyond report generation, the tool can assist with complex purchasing decisions, such as selecting cars, appliances, or furniture, by providing personalized recommendations based on thorough research.
This powerful tool is driven by an optimized version of the upcoming OpenAI o3 model, specifically designed for web browsing and data analysis. It uses advanced reasoning capabilities to search, interpret, and analyze vast amounts of text, images, and PDFs available online. The system dynamically adapts its search strategy based on the information it encounters, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the topic. Transparency is prioritized, as “Deep Research” provides citations for all sources used and a summary of its analytical process, enabling users to verify the information presented.
Currently, “Deep Research” is accessible to ChatGPT Pro users, with plans to extend availability to ChatGPT Plus and Team users in the future. To initiate a research project, users simply select “Deep Research” in the message composer and enter their query. Spreadsheets or files can be attached to provide additional context. A sidebar displays a summary of the steps taken and sources consulted during the research process. Completion time ranges from five to thirty minutes, and users receive a notification upon completion. OpenAI plans to enhance the reports with embedded images, data visualizations, and other analytical outputs in the coming weeks.
