Microsoft is bringing the full capabilities of Windows 11 to Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets in December. This integration will allow users to access a local Windows PC or a cloud instance of Windows 365 directly from their VR headset.
The experience is described as a “private, high-quality, large, multi-monitor workstation,” offering users a new way to interact with Windows in a 3D space. Microsoft is calling these immersive experiences “Volumetric Apps.”
Developers will have access to an API to build plug-ins for new or existing 3D Windows desktop apps, expanding the possibilities for immersive Windows experiences in VR.
This move builds on Microsoft’s previous collaborations with Meta, which brought Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 productivity features to Quest headsets. It also follows the launch of Xbox Cloud Gaming on Quest devices.
By bringing Windows 11 to VR, Microsoft is pushing the boundaries of how users can interact with their operating system and applications, potentially paving the way for new forms of productivity and entertainment in the metaverse.
