Honda has unveiled its highly anticipated Honda Zero electric vehicle prototypes at CES 2025, showcasing a sedan and an SUV that embody the company’s vision for the future of electric mobility. These vehicles, slated for production in 2026, feature striking designs, advanced technology, and a new in-house-developed operating system named after Honda’s iconic Asimo robot.
Distinctive Designs with a Retro Touch
The Honda 0 SUV and Honda 0 Saloon prototypes sport distinctive designs that blend modern aesthetics with nostalgic elements. The SUV, based on the Space-Hub concept, features a unique rear cargo opening with fold-down tables, while the Saloon, inspired by the Saloon concept, boasts a sleek and aerodynamic profile with retro-style headlights reminiscent of the Lamborghini Countach.
Both vehicles feature spacious interiors with a minimalist design and a large dashboard-spanning screen, similar to the upcoming Afeela EV from Honda’s joint venture with Sony. The Saloon prototype also showcases a yoke-style steering wheel that rotates to facilitate entry and exit, thanks to the drive-by-wire system.
Asimo OS: Honda’s Intelligent Operating System
Honda’s new Asimo operating system (OS) takes center stage in the Zero prototypes. Named after the company’s beloved humanoid robot, Asimo OS promises to deliver an intelligent and personalized driving experience.
The OS enables features like “ultra-personal optimization” of the digital experience, automated driving capabilities, and integrated management of electronic control units (ECUs) for enhanced vehicle control.
Level 3 Automated Driving
Honda Zero vehicles will be equipped with Level 3 automated driving, allowing drivers to take their hands off the wheel and their attention off the road in certain conditions. Honda aims to offer this technology in heavy traffic situations initially, with plans to expand its capabilities through over-the-air updates.
Collaboration with Renesas for a System-on-a-Chip
Honda also announced a partnership with Renesas, a Japanese semiconductor manufacturer, to develop a system-on-a-chip (SoC) for future Zero vehicles. This SoC will consolidate multiple ECUs into a single unit, reducing complexity and improving processing efficiency.
A New Era of Electric Mobility
The Honda Zero prototypes represent a significant step forward in Honda’s electrification strategy. With their distinctive designs, advanced technology, and focus on user experience, these vehicles showcase Honda’s commitment to innovation and its vision for the future of electric mobility.
