Following a recent lawsuit settlement regarding Siri data collection, Apple has published an article emphasizing its commitment to user privacy and clarifying how Siri handles user data.
Apple reiterated its dedication to protecting user data, stating that its products are designed with privacy in mind. The company asserts that Siri data is never used for marketing profiles or shared with advertisers.
Whenever possible, Siri utilizes on-device processing to handle requests offline without sending data to Apple’s servers. For requests that require server communication, Apple uses a random identifier not associated with the user’s Apple ID, ensuring anonymity and preventing data tracking.
Audio recordings of user requests are deleted unless users explicitly choose to share them with Apple for feedback purposes.
Similar privacy practices apply to Apple Intelligence, with most data processed on-device. For requests requiring access to larger models, Apple’s Private Cloud Compute extends privacy and security measures to the cloud.
The lawsuit, filed in 2019, alleged that Apple recorded Siri conversations without consent and shared them with third parties. Despite defending its privacy practices, Apple agreed to a $95 million settlement. Details on how users can claim their share of the settlement are not yet available.
Apple’s article and recent actions demonstrate its ongoing commitment to user privacy. By highlighting on-device processing, anonymization techniques, and data security measures, Apple aims to assure users that their Siri interactions are handled with confidentiality and respect for their privacy.
