Huawei is generating excitement with promises of an “incredible” new phone set to be unveiled next month. Richard Yu, Chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, has hinted at a device so innovative that it will drive a nationwide rush to purchase. Adding to the intrigue, Yu emphasized that the phone will be affordable for everyone.
These pronouncements follow Yu’s previous allusions to “beyond imagination products” for 2025, with the most innovative of these slated for a March reveal. The timing aligns with rumors of a new foldable clamshell smartphone from Huawei, potentially the Pocket 3 model, which is typically released after the Chinese Spring Festival.
Leaks suggest the Pocket 3 will be thinner, smaller, and lighter than its predecessor, the Pocket 2. However, a key question remains regarding the processor. Due to US sanctions limiting Huawei’s access to advanced chip-making technology, the Pocket 3 may be restricted to a 7nm application processor, placing it behind competitors using 3nm chips.
Despite these challenges, Huawei has demonstrated resilience and innovation. 1 The company briefly led the global foldable smartphone market in Q1 of last year, surpassing Samsung. 2 While Samsung regained the top spot in Q3, a successful launch of the Pocket 3 could propel Huawei back into market leadership.
