Mercedes-Benz is taking a multifaceted approach to its upcoming CLA sedan, offering electric, hybrid, and gasoline versions, all built on the company’s new MMA platform. This strategic move comes as the automaker recalibrates its electrification plans following underwhelming sales of its current electric vehicle lineup.
The MMA platform, debuting with the CLA, is designed to accommodate various powertrains, reflecting Mercedes-Benz’s recognition of the continued coexistence of electric and combustion engine vehicles. “We’re in an era where we’re going towards electrification, but in the year 2025 obviously, we’re not 100 percent electrification. So for many years to come we will have a duality,” stated Mercedes-Benz Group CEO Ola Källenius.

“Electric-First” Approach:
Mercedes-Benz is adopting an “electric-first” strategy, launching the CLA as an EV before introducing its internal combustion and hybrid variants. This approach contrasts with traditional platform development, where automakers typically begin with gasoline-powered vehicles.
The new MMA platform results in a larger CLA, with an extended wheelbase and increased height to accommodate battery packs and enhance passenger space.

EQXX-Inspired Design and Technology:
The CLA draws inspiration from the EQXX concept car, emphasizing efficiency and long-range capabilities. The electric CLA will offer two battery options, with the larger 85.5 kWh battery providing an estimated range of 492 miles based on WLTP standards.
The CLA incorporates advanced technologies, including a brake-by-wire system for optimized energy recuperation and 800-volt architecture for fast charging.

Next-Generation Software and Connectivity:
Mercedes-Benz introduces its new MB.OS software stack with the CLA, featuring an “AI-enhanced” user experience and over-the-air updates. The system incorporates AI from Google and Microsoft, enabling features like mood-based lighting adjustments and enhanced voice assistance.
The CLA also boasts a pillar-to-pillar Superscreen display and advanced driver-assistance systems, with features available for purchase via OTA updates.

Pricing for the new CLA will be revealed later this year.
